Batch systems based on ISA-88

The concept of a so-called “multi-purpose system” makes it possible to manufacture several products on one system. This requires a very modular and flexible automation system that can be easily adapted to the production requirements of different products, especially in the pharmaceutical environment where qualification is required.
SpiraTec consistently implemented this modular concept with SIEMENS SIMATIC PCS 7 and SIMATIC Batch when building a new production plant for a customer in the pharmaceutical sector. A total of 34 mobile containers form the core of the new plant, which can be connected to the fixed plant components via plug-in connections. Although this is advantageous for material transportation, as it eliminates the need for complex pipelines, it poses a major challenge for automation.

Project details

  • The production line is constantly reconfigured for the manufacture of different products from different mobile containers using flexible connection options
  • The automation must automatically recognize and use the currently connected devices without reconfiguration

Technical implementation

  • The physical equipment and technical functions have been modularized in accordance with ISA-88
  • In the higher-level batch system, the recipes can be designed by process engineers in a system-neutral manner
  • The qualification of the individual equipment modules and technical functions enables the individual configuration of the modules for the manufacture of new products in the GMP environment

Project summary

The concept implemented by SpiraTec enables efficient production. Previously, a separate production plant was required for the manufacture of different pharmaceutical products, which was not always fully utilized. A single production plant, on which several products can be manufactured, offers the customer the opportunity to react quickly and flexibly to constantly changing market requirements.
