Lean Construction Management in Practice – A Conversation with Elisabeth Muck

What are the actual benefits of Lean Construction Management on a construction site? And why isn’t a schedule alone enough when multiple trades, interfaces, and a tight timeframe all come into play? We discuss this in our new career blog interview with Elisabeth Muck, project manager at SpiraTec.
Elisabeth, to start off with a brief introduction: What is your role at SpiraTec, and what does your typical workday look like?
I work in project management and operational project control for projects in the pharmaceutical, life sciences, medical device, and semiconductor industries.
My responsibilities range from schedule, task, and interface management to supplier coordination, as well as change management, escalation, and – depending on the project – contract and claim issues.
In addition, I serve as the deputy quality management representative for the SpiraTec Group. This allows me to combine project management with quality and compliance issues.
How did you become interested in Lean Construction Management (LCM), and what excites you about this approach?
Through hands-on experience. For complex construction projects, a schedule alone isn’t enough. What matters is whether the prerequisites for the next phase of work are actually in place. That’s exactly what I like about LCM: dependencies become apparent early on, obstacles can be removed, and processes can be actively managed before they lead to schedule delays.
During a 2026 Summer Shutdown for a pharmaceutical company, you took on a significant portion of the operational process management. What exactly did your role in the project entail?
My focus was on operational process management and cross-trade coordination. At the same time, I took on tasks related to on-site construction supervision.
Many companies were working in parallel, sometimes in night and weekend shifts. The timeframe was tight, and the trades were highly interdependent.
My task, therefore, was not just to determine where we stood. What was crucial was to make the next step possible and ensure overall progress.
Many people don’t really understand LCM at first. How would you explain the concept to someone who has never heard of it?
For me, LCM can be boiled down to four questions:
Where do we stand?
What’s next?
Are all prerequisites in place?
If not: Who will solve this challenge and by when?
If, for example, materials, an approval, or preliminary work from another trade is missing, this must be identified early on. LCM thus turns a schedule into an active management tool.
What distinguishes LCM from a traditional construction site meeting or schedule tracking?
Traditional schedule tracking often concludes: We’re behind schedule. LCM also asks: Why? And what specific changes do we need to make now?
If a trade can’t start because a prerequisite is missing, it’s of little use to simply document the delay. You have to resolve the root cause. This transforms schedule tracking into true process control.
What questions are central to you during the daily LCM coordination meetings?
We systematically went through each trade:
What has been accomplished?
What’s next?
Is a prerequisite missing?
Is there an interface?
Who needs to take action?
The lead technicians, foremen, and responsible construction supervisors were directly involved. This allowed challenges to be resolved immediately among the parties involved. This was supported by rolling whiteboard planning with a roughly three-week forecast. In the end, it had to be clear: Who does what by when, and when do we need to escalate?
What was the biggest challenge during the shutdown, and how did your team solve it?
The biggest challenge was the combination of a tight timeframe, numerous interfaces, and last-minute changes. A technical malfunction or a delayed preliminary task can quickly affect several subsequent tasks. In such cases, we had to quickly determine:
What happened?
What is affected?
What alternatives do we have?
Who needs to take action or make a decision?
Afterward, the process was adjusted, and implementation was consistently monitored. The key was not to spend too much time managing challenges, but to work together to find a feasible solution.
Especially in complex projects, many trades and interests intersect. What skills are particularly important for successfully coordinating all stakeholders?
Technical understanding, clear communication, reliability, and assertiveness are crucial for me. Especially as a young project manager, I first had to earn acceptance on the construction site. Many site supervisors and installers have decades of experience; a title alone isn’t enough. What matters is demonstrating technical expertise, understanding the big picture, and consistently following through on agreements.
Acceptance comes from competence, reliability, and consistency – not from raising your voice.
Especially in project management, you lead many stakeholders without being their direct supervisor. That’s why you have to make an impact through competence, clarity, and reliability.
You have to listen and take good arguments on board, but at the same time remain clear and consistent when it’s necessary for the overall success of the project. It is crucial to maintain a view of the overall project and the interfaces between the various trades. Different interests converge here – from the contractors carrying out the work, through project management and the client, to quality control and operations. You must understand these interests, make them transparent, and align them with a common project goal. This also involves presenting complex technical topics to the client in a structured manner and fostering a shared understanding of decisions and their implications.
To me, good leadership means listening, providing guidance, and clearly advocating for decisions.
LCM thrives on transparency and daily coordination. Why is being present on the construction site so important in this context?
Because actual project progress happens on the construction site, not on the schedule. That’s why I was on site several times a day. There, you can quickly see whether preliminary work is missing, whether tasks are interfering with one another, or whether new interfaces are emerging.
At the same time, I was directly available to those involved. This allowed many issues to be resolved immediately. Site tours and LCM meetings therefore complemented each other very well.
What are you particularly proud of following the successful completion of SSD2026, and what did you personally take away from the project?
I’m proud that, despite the fast-paced nature of the project and the tight timeline, we collectively stayed focused on implementation.
For me, this confirmed that effective project management requires, above all, clarity: Clear processes. Clear responsibilities. Clear deadlines. And the willingness to intervene early when deviations occur. Especially in the pharmaceutical sector, speed must never come at the expense of quality, safety, or compliance.
What advice would you give to those just starting their careers or young project managers who are interested in project management and LCM?
Go where the project is actually being carried out. You don’t learn project management just from schedules and reports. You have to understand how decisions, interfaces, and dependencies play out in practice. Take responsibility, ask questions, and don’t just try to figure out why something isn’t working. The more important question is: What do we need to keep things moving forward?
