SpiraTec implements general planning project: Green hydrogen as a driver of sustainable production

  • 23.06.2026

After approximately 100,000 project hours, SpiraTec AG reached a major milestone: the commissioning of a state-of-the-art chemical plant with a total investment volume in the high double-digit million-euro range for a renowned pharmaceutical industry client. For SpiraTec, this is one of the first projects of this scale in the role of general planner and a compelling demonstration of the company’s expertise in managing complex large-scale projects.

The new chemical plant operates using green hydrogen. Safety and sustainability were key priorities throughout the project: a sophisticated ventilation system, sprinkler and foam extinguishing systems, and a firefighting water retention facility in the basement ensure compliance with all relevant requirements and extensive fire protection measures.

The fully automated plant includes more than 1,400 pipelines and uses an energy-optimized ventilation concept with separate supply and exhaust air systems for production and social areas, as well as high-performance heat recovery for improved energy efficiency.

General planning across all project phases

From the feasibility study through basic and detailed engineering to construction and installation supervision, as well as support during commissioning and documentation, SpiraTec was responsible for the complete general planning scope. This included 3D plant and piping design, HVAC, building services and instrumentation/control engineering, process control systems, architecture and civil engineering, sprinkler systems, and building IT in cooperation with an external partner.

This was made possible through close interdisciplinary collaboration between numerous internal specialist teams, ranging from Process and Piping to Civil, Automation, and E&I Engineering.

A defining feature of the project was the consistent use of Building Information Modeling (BIM). Using tools such as Aveva Diagrams & E3D, Autodesk Revit, Navisworks, LICAD, Rohr2, and software solutions from Solar Computer GmbH, SpiraTec achieved optimal coordination across all disciplines.

Through interdisciplinary collaboration and the consistent use of BIM technology, SpiraTec ensures a high degree of planning reliability, seamless integration, and maximum efficiency throughout every project phase. As a result, the customer benefits from reduced interfaces, shorter project durations, and high execution quality.

A milestone for the future

“This project marks a decisive step in our company’s development. We have demonstrated that we are capable of successfully delivering even the most complex projects across locations, departments, and companies,” explains Frank Schönel, Vice President Industrial Engineering & Design at SpiraTec AG. SpiraTec met all operational quality requirements and quality management standards and completed the project within both budget and schedule. All defined milestones were achieved. With the successful realization of this chemical plant, SpiraTec has impressively demonstrated its capabilities as a general planner and laid the foundation for further pioneering projects, particularly in the pharmaceutical, chemical, and sustainable production industries.
