The Industrial IoT and data lakes

The integration of an Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) in conjunction with data lakes offers enormous potential for many companies. This is because the storage concept allows data from connected IoT devices as well as from traditional systems to be merged and processed. Data pipelines can help to efficiently orchestrate the various data streams.

Edge devices, i.e. IIoT devices set up close to the machine, play an important role in the digital transformation of industry. They enable the collection and transmission of data in real time, allowing users to improve operating processes, increase efficiency and reduce costs. From small devices such as sensors or actuators to highly complex plant components, data such as temperature, pressure and humidity can be transmitted as well as data for diagnostics, monitoring and control. This data can be used to identify patterns that indicate machine failures, for example. Maintenance work can be planned and carried out to prevent this. It is also possible to create near-optimal operating conditions for the IIoT device so that wear and tear is reduced and service life is increased. Global monitoring, maintenance and servicing of plant components can also offer significant financial benefits, especially in the case of globally distributed plants and plant components.

The detailed elaboration on the topic can be found in the special edition Knowledge Compact “IIoT – Industrial Internet of Things” issue 2024/25 of IT & Production or online:
