Virginia Heitzhausen wrote her master’s thesis at SpiraTec and is now part of the Industrial IT Solutions team as a consultant. In this interview, she shares how it all began – and what she particularly values about her new job.
Virginia, how did you come to join SpiraTec?
While studying for my master’s degree in Life Sciences at Leibniz University Hannover, I was looking for an opportunity to write my thesis with a strong practical focus. The topics at SpiraTec – especially at the intersection of IT and the process industry – immediately appealed to me. Through the team in Wunstorf, I had the chance to write my thesis at SpiraTec.
What was your thesis about?
I explored how to develop a module for a MES (Manufacturing Execution System) using a low-code platform like Mendix – specifically, a quality management module. I was able to directly apply my knowledge of bioprocess engineering and bioinformatics from my studies. What I found particularly exciting was working as a citizen developer – although I don’t have a degree in computer science, I had already worked on smaller programming projects during my studies.
What happened next?
I was so enthusiastic about the team and the projects that I wanted to stay on – and luckily, that worked out! Since then, I’ve been working as a consultant in the Industrial IT Solutions area. I’m involved in projects, advise clients, and have also taken on responsibilities in sales and project management.
